The “Belly Shaker”:
The Honda SS 50 is a men’s moped (also called belly shifter) with foot shift and manual clutch. These mopeds owe their fame to the working principle of the engine: in contrast to the majority of mopeds used in the Netherlands.the Honda SS 50 does not have a two-stroke, but a four-stroke engine. Non-connoisseurs and a-technicians can recognize a four-stroke (moped) engine well by the sound: the high, snarling two-stroke sound is not perceptible. A Honda four-stroke motorcycle produces (with a standard exhaust) a soft, humming sound. This is a result of the controlled supply of the gasoline / air mixture and the also controlled removal of exhaustgases. The control of the supply and discharge is done by a mechanism of a camshaft that operates the inlet and exhaustvalve. Also, unlike a two-stroke engine, it is not lubricated by oil added to gasoline (mixing lubrication).). So there is no discernible blue walm and smell of burnt oil. De Honda SS 50 is one of the better known moped models of Honda samen with the Honda C50 and the honda cd50
To the Netherlands.
In the Netherlands, the SS 50 (full SS 50 Z /ZE) K3 was delivered from 1973 to 1978. Due to Dutch legislation , pedals were mandatory (because moped) and a stair installation was therefore installed. This allowed the owner to move the moped while pedaling (like on a bicycle) due to lack of gasoline. In practice, the stair installation was regularly removed. Other typical Dutch features: The 30 centimeter long white lacquered piece of rear fender, the bicycle bell and the top speed (mechanically) limited to 40 kilometers per hour. (Source: WlKlPEDlA)
If there is a disadvantage to be attributed to the four-stroke principle, it is that a four-stroke engine has more parts than a two-stroke engine. There are therefore more parts that can break down, or produce more internal friction. However, practice shows that the Honda engineare extremely reliable. As a result, the – possible – disadvantages do not outweigh the advantages: A four-stroke engine uses the combustion energy much better, so that the efficiency is much higher. The result: Bearing fuel consumption, no so-called rinsing losses, less heat development, higher torque, less noise.
